THULAMELA MARKS DISABILITY RIGHTS AWARENESS MONTH

As the countdown towards the commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) gains momentum, with merely 13 days to go, Thulamela Local Municipality marked the Disability Rights Awareness Month in partnership with Fulufhelo Special School.

Held at Fulufhelo Special School on Friday, 17 November 2023, the occasion was a build up event towards the commemoration of IDPD which will be observed by the United Nations (UN) on 03 December 2023 under the theme: “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities”.

South Africa commemorates National Disability Rights Awareness Month annually between the 3rd of November and the 3rd of December. The theme for this year is “Consolidate and accelerate the rights of persons with disabilities into the future “.

The Fulufhelo Special School venue was full to capacity with various stakeholders including government departments, NGOs, University of Venda, learners and parents who came in droves to express their unwavering support for the community of persons with disabilities.

International Day Of Persons With Disabilities – 3 December

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.

The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The main programme of the observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the UN Headquarters in New York will include the Opening, panel discussions and cultural events.

Member States, civil society organizations and the private sector are welcome to organize their own events to celebrate the International Day to raise awareness and promote the rights and perspectives of persons with disabilities around the world.
